Aging and oxidisation of the bitumen binder in old pavements causes the surface treatment to become brittle and therefore unable to absorb movement which causes surface cracks to appear. Unless prompt action is taken moisture will penetrate the pavement cracks and cause the road base to fail. Bitac® is used as a means to prolong the life of the pavement by providing a waterproof and stress relieving membrane between old and new surfaces.
Settlement and movement of concrete culverts will lead to opening of the joints between individual units. The loss of fill material between the butt joints of the culvert units will result in the settlement of the surface above the joint. Bitac® is used as a flexible membrane to prevent the movement of the fine material through the joints in concrete culverts ensuring the stability of structures above the culvert.
New and existing concrete bridge decks require a waterproofing of construction joints. The application of Bitac® strips will provide an effective long term waterproofing function.
