Reno® Mattresses are thin flexible cages (less than 500mm thick), made of hexagonal double twisted woven wire mesh. The Mattress is divided into cells by internal diaphragms/partitions positioned at 1 m centres to limit rock fill movement during high flow conditions.
When installed on the base of watercourses, the
Reno® Mattresses must be placed such that their internal diaphragms are perpendicular to the general flow direction.
Due to their flexible nature, they are used mainly for river bank and scour protection, channel linings for erosion control, and embankment stability. They are filled with rock at the project site (either in-situ or pre-filled and placed) to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures to promote rapid growth of natural vegetation.
Reno® Mattresses are an environmentally friendly system and unlike concrete products, are not considered to be a “hard solution”. The voids in the rockfill become progressively filled with silt, promoting vegetation growth which is essential to eventually re-creating the pre-existing environment. To accelerate vegetation establishment, the rock voids can be filled with soil during installation. An erosion control blanket can also be placed over the rock/soil fill prior to securing the lid to create an environment where vegetation will flourish.

The woven wire mesh can either be Galmac (95% Zinc 5% Aluminium Mischmetal Alloy) coated mild steel or Galmac coated with an additional PVC coating if required. Galmac has significantly improved corrosion resistance to zinc in both chemical and physical terms. This technology when applied to steel wire products provides up to about three times greater protection per unit coating mass, than do zinc coatings. PVC coated units are recommended in River or fluvial conditions where abrasive sediments may exist, marine conditions, mining applications, where soil is highly acidic or alkalinic or where an extended design life is required.
Advantages of our double diaphragm Reno® Mattresses over single diaphragm Rock Mattresses:
- There is no weak joint between the base and diaphragms i.e. they are made from one continuous mesh panel
- The diaphragm positions do not have to be adjusted as their alignment is perfectly straight
- The double diaphragm produces a more rigid unit for easier placement and rock filling as stiffer diaphragms do not buckle to the extent of single diaphragms
- Where Mattresses have to be cut to smaller sizes, the double diaphragm units prove to be far more economical than single diaphragm units in that each segment will have side panels which is not the case with single diaphragm Mattresses where an additional mesh panel will have to be connected

- Double diaphragm units are also suited to pre-filling and lifting into place as the diaphragms are twice as strong in tension than single diaphragm units
- With single diaphragm Rock Mattresses, the internal diaphragms are loosely connected to the base which means an extra procedure is required by the installer to create a tightly packed unit
Reno® Mattresses are manufactured using a 2.0mmØ diameter wire (3.0mmØ O/D for PVC) and in a 60mm x 80mm (nominal) hexagonal mesh configuration. They are available in the following standard sizes (note dimension tolerances apply):
