Geotextiles were developed as a response to geotechnical demands for more economic methods of mechanical and hydraulic soil stabilisation. Traditional approaches with natural materials were increasing in cost, limited in availability and often difficult or impractical to construct. The development of synthetic polymers, in the geotextile industry, provided a low-cost alternative to natural materials, with the added advantage of factory-controlled characteristics.
ELCOMAX® non-woven staple fibre geotextiles were developed in the 1960’s in answer to the increasing hydraulic demands placed on revetment systems and, are to this day, the only Australian made non-woven staple fibre geotextile on the market. The unique properties of staple fibre non-woven geotextiles allows for coastal engineers to specify mechanical and hydraulic criteria to meet the needs of the most rigorous applications.
Main ELCOMAX® Applications
Channel and bank protection
ELCOMAX® non-woven staple fibre geotextiles were custom designed in the 1960’s in Europe as a solution to the increasing hydraulic demands placed on revetment systems. The unique characteristics of staple fibre non-woven geotextiles allows for engineers to specify mechanical and hydraulic criteria to meet the needs of the most rigorous applications.
Shore / coastal protection works
From the 1970’s, ELCO SOLUTIONS have supplied engineered innovative technology utilising ELCOMAX® non-woven staple fibre geotextiles to some of Australia’s most demanding coastal projects. Since then, ELCO SOLUTIONS have worked consistently with coastal authorities and engineers to develop “soft solutions” for coastal erosion protection, utilising heavy-weight ELCOMAX® non-woven staple fibre geotextiles.
Landfill liner protection
ELCO SOLUTIONS is able to produce extremely heavy-weight ELCOMAX® non-woven staple fibre geotextiles, up to 2000g/m2, for protection of geomembrane or geocomposite liners in landfill or containment applications. This is possible due to the flexibility of geotextile manufacture and the unique staple fibre blend of the raw material used in ELCOMAX® non-woven staple fibre geotextiles.
Containment structures
ELCOMAX® non-woven staple fibre geotextiles are employed in the fabrication of hydraulically filled tubes and dry filled ELCOMAX® geocontainers up to 300 tonnes in mass. Increasing environmental and erosion concerns allow these products to be successfully applied in sea walls, groynes, artificial reefs and emergency containment. The development of these products has enabled the construction of mega-sand containers up to 4.6 metre diameter for placement by bottom dumping barge to form artificial reefs for beach erosion protection, encouragement of sea-life habitat or surf improvement.
